Infrastructural Projects in Abastumani
The Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia (MRDI) has commenced several infrastructural projects in Abastumani. Rehabilitation of historical houses and reconstruction of Baghdati-Abastumani linking road undergoes implementation at present stage.
The donor organization of Abastumani Historical Houses Project is the World Bank (WB) and its tentative cost amounts to GEL 3.7 million.
The Project of the MDF envisages rehabilitation and reinstatement of 18 historical houses, built in the 18th and 19th centuries, located at Central Street in borough Abastumani. Emergency sections of several houses are considered to be reinforced as well. The houses with timber balconies of rare architectural type have the openwork decorations and inclined roofs that are distinctive for that period of time. Rehabilitation of historical houses will be finalized in autumn of 2019.
Besides the referenced project, the MDF has announced also the Bidding for rehabilitation of Academician Evgeni Kharadze Georgian National Astrophysical Observatory and bidding procedures undergo implementation.
The project envisages total rehabilitation of the building designated for the large telescope AZT-11 at which there will be placed the information center and a café for the visitors. There will be arranged also the exhibition and working areas and available library will be restored. The central site of the settlement being in the vicinity of the main building as per the project is also envisaged to be provided with amenities within the project. The cableway built in 1982 is to be restored and WCs and parking lot are be arranged there too.
The Observatory was founded in 1932 by Evgeni Kharadze and it was the first astrophysical Observatory in former Soviet Unit. The main directions of scientific researches of the Observatory are studies on galaxies, stars, discrepancies of the systems of the Sun and upper atmosphere.
The Observatory is visited by approximately 10 thousand tourists a year. There has been employed 125 people on site as of today.
In 2019-2020, the MDF plans rehabilitation of WS and WWS systems and project of urban renewal in borough Abastumani.
Reconstruction of Baghdati-Abastumani connecting road was commenced by the Roads Department. At first stage the 3,2 km section undergoes rehabilitation. This road is of significant character as the distance from the central part of Georgia to Turkish border will be shortened and less time (about 90-120 minutes) will be taken.
The infrastructural projects that are started and planned in Abastumani will contribute to attraction of additional flow of tourists to the regions and employment of local population residents.
