World Bank support to Georgia – Today agreement with cost of USD 30 million was signed
On August 18, 2014 government of Georgia and World Bank has signed agreement of allocating USD 30 million for financing “Regional and Municipal Infrastructure Development second project. Agreement was signed by Minister of finance Nodar Khaduri and World Bank regional director in South Caucasus Henri Kerali. MDF Executive director Mr. Giorgi Amashukeli was attending signing ceremony. Within the scope of mentioned agreement allocated sum will be utilized by MDF for implementing infrastructural projects in different regions of Georgia.
It is significant that Switzerland Development Cooperation agency as a grant will allocate USD 5 million. The main aim of project is improvement of municipal infrastructure services and local self-government institutional development.
Minister or finance Nodar Khaduri stated: “The World Bank’s support is significant for Georgia’s social-economic development, project that will be implemented within the scope of today signed agreement is oriented for regions fast development and population prosperity.
Government of Georgia in its social- economic development strategy specified unemployment and poverty problems solution as main priorities. On the signing ceremony World Bank’s regional director in South Caucasus Henri Kerali stated:” In this regard financing regional and municipal infrastructural development programs, decentralization, establishing effective local self-governing system and ensuring towns and villages with reliable municipal infrastructure is significant”.
After signing ceremony MDF Executive Director Giorgi Amashukeli stated to journalists the following: “Fund has received many applications and projects requesting financing. Within the scope of this agreement till the end of the year we will start financing concrete projects, in short terms population will see results from implemented projects financed by this agreement.
At this stage, within the framework of mentioned project rehabilitation of roads in some villages, water supply system, WWTP, kindergarten and sports complex rehabilitation is planned.
It should be noted that with World Bank’s financial support (approximately 85 million USD) current “ Regional and Municipal Infrastructure Development first project” is in its final phase which envisages water supply system, sewerage system, local roads rehabilitation, bank protection works implementation in different regions of Georgia and improvement of living conditions of population affected by conflict.
